East Asia Program Presents: Learning from Each Other- Education in China and the U.S. by Yingyi Ma
Assistant Professor of Sociology
Chinese students are flocking to American schools and universities in the belief that the American education system is superior. At the same time, Americans look to China—where students have much higher test scores—to seek ways to improve the U.S. system. What explains this paradox? And what can we learn by comparing the two systems?
Professor Ma has written about education in China and the United States from the perspectives of race, ethnicity, gender, science, and immigration. She graduated from Nanjing University and received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Johns Hopkins University.
